|
7/31/2018 - Ten teams gathered Tuesday evening in Westwood at Xaverian Brothers High School for the 8th Annual Northeast 7v7 New England Championship. The teams qualified for the Championship based off their play in one or more of the three regional tournaments.
As expected, pool play was very competitive with no team going unbeaten. The closet pool featured Dennis-Yarmouth, Lynn English and eventual Champion Suffield Academy. These three teams all went 3-1 in pool play forcing the tie breaker rules to come into play too advance two of three to the final four. Suffield earned the one seed as they edged out Dennis-Yarmouth in points scored by 2. This left DY and Lynn English. English claimed the second spot because they beat Dennis-Yarmouth head to head, 15-14. Dennis-Yarmouth the defending champion was the only team to beat Suffield in their 14 games played in both tournaments. Pool B advanced Buckingham Brown & Nichols (3-1) and Lynn Classical (3-1). BB&N was the one seed because the beat Classical 14-6 head to head.
The semi-final match ups pitted BB&N verse Lynn English and Suffield Academy verse Lynn Classical. Suffield displayed excellent defense stopping Classical early to build a 12-0 lead. The knock out punch came on a pick-six as Classical looked to be getting back into the game. Suffield advance 18-6. BB&N and Lynn English was an excellent game. B&NN scored first and English matched the scored but added an extra point to lead 7-6. BB&N answered and added a two-point conversion to pull head 14-7. English responded with a scoring drive but failed on the conversion and trailed 14-13. The English defense held and the offense reclaimed the lead with a quick score. Up 19-14, English went for two and failed.
BB&N calmly drove the field and scored with a minute left. The failed conversion left English 35 seconds as the trailed 20-19. The Bulldog picked up 10 yards on first down but a fade into the end zone on the final play fell incomplete.
The final was all about defense. Ten minutes into the game Suffield broke through and scored to jump ahead 6-0. BB&N responded with its best drive scoring and adding the extra point for a 7-6 lead. Suffield Academy quarterback Tyler Van Dyke lead his team down the field for the go ahead score with under four minutes remaining. His beautiful two-point conversion pass to Jalen Dottin expanded the lead to 14-7. BB&N attempt tie was stopped when Dottin intercepted a deep ball allowing Suffield to run out the clock after they collected one first down.

Billerica Bombs Stoughton, 12-7 to win The 2015 New England Championship
7/29/2015 - Billerica came out of the gate fast and never stopped en route to the New England Championship Wednesday evening at Bishop Fenwick High School. The Indians ran the table in their pool to advance to the Final Four.
After beating South Regional Champion Newton South in the semis Billerica faced Stoughton who beat Foxboro in the other semi-final. This setup a rematch from pool play. The first game was a 24-15 Billerica win. The rematch was a defensive war as the heat was beginning to take its toil on the players. With Stoughton, leading 7-6 late in the game quarterback Justin Beck found Dean Brooks on a go pattern for the winning touchdown. Stoughton had one final play before the horn but the 40 yard bomb was knocked down to secure the win, 12-7. |
